Recently, Vincent Laforet blogged a challenge to take pictures of arrows in NYC, Barcelona, and Shanghai.I just happened to live in the NYC area and just happened to be signed up to attend a DSLR filmmaking workshop of his today, so I figured I’d bring my camera along and submit my entry- UP, an array of twelve arrows I found in the city.  Let’s just say that photography’s really cropping reality.  To see in full screen, hit the F11 key on your keyboard and click to the image to use the viewer:

On The Streets

“All those moments will be lost in time–like tears in rain…”

-Roy Batty, Blade Runner

I’ve shot New York City streets from day one of my photography obsession. It feels like a lifetime since I started, and it will take a lifetime to master capturing the chaotic, transient stream of activity. Regardless, these days I’ve felt like my creativity and mind’s eye have dulled, so I’ve tried to take my camera along with me during my commutes again. My favorite masters Ernst Haas and Henri Cartier Bresson indirectly taught me to see the world in both color and in grayscale, in abstract patterns and precise compositions of activity, emotion, and human spirit. I hope you can see the little I’ve absorbed from them, if any.  Click any picture for full slideshow view, and use the arrow keys to navigate.

Dan & Kendra’s Wedding

“She loves all mankind–and she loves the Almighty.”

As we were recently shooting our friends’ wedding in California, that line from Kendra’s father’s speech stuck out to me.  Although he paid tribute to his daughter, he truly well summed up both halves of this wonderful couple. Not only are they kind, generous, and full of life & faith, they sure know how to throw a party!

After a touching ceremony, the sun set in lightly breezy, 70°F LA weather, and the reception kicked off with Dan & Kendra entering to the tune of Austin Powers’ theme song. It directly continued with non-stop dancing on a jam-packed dance floor, a lively photo booth, great food and flowing drinks, impassioned speeches, well-distributed glow necklaces, and concluded with costumed friends & family parading out to the Village People’s “YMCA”.  Considering how “I got a feeling (Tonight’s going to be a good night)” by the Black Eyed Peas kicked off the dancing, I couldn’t help thinking how this came true.  Indeed it was a good good night, and Dan & Kendra lived it up!

Thanks to the wonderfully accommodating team at Fullerton Cameras for meeting our special requests and extra friendly customer service. They patiently put up with our many questions and have a great rental, used, and new selection, so if you’re in the area check them out!

LA Post 1 – Griffith Observatory

Welcome to LA, land of smog, sun, flashy cars, and plenty of stars, terrestrial and celestial.  Recently, we flew out to cover our friends’ wedding (a future post to come) and to visit family.  Besides the requisite In ‘N Out visit, I had to take Sarah to see Griffith Observatory.  We prepped for the visit by watching “Rebel Without A Cause” beforehand, and it surprisingly hasn’t changed much since James Dean filmed it almost 60 years ago.  I sure wish NYC had a public resource like this.  It provides a free museum to the public, and the planetarium show and telescope views don’t cost much, either.  We particularly liked its main feature–its vast, sweeping, unblocked views of the entire city and beyond:

Roots in the Heights

This summer our church’s Roots in the Heights ministry had a six week Sunday’s children’s day camp for our church and neighborhood kids.  It was a great time of sharing Christ’s love with children through teachings, music, and arts & crafts.  We had the pleasure of witnessing and getting involved with this remarkable ministry by taking photos and videos for a video recap.  See below for the final result complied and edited by our talented friend Dennis Christians!

Hamilton Park

For a spectacular scenic view of the Manhattan skyline, Hamilton Park is the way to go.  Located in Weehawken, NJ, it overlooks the Hudson River and in our opinion, has the best view of Manhattan in the entire region.  It’s named after former U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton, who died in a famous duel in 1804 with former Vice President Aaron Burr in that particular location.  A couple weekends ago we rented a tilt shift lens and had the pleasure of capturing some shots as the sun set.  Enjoy the view!

For a quick history on the Burr-Hamilton duel, check out this rap by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the extremely talented writer and star of Broadway musical In the Heights!

P.S. Got milk?

Christina & Jack’s Wedding Tea Ceremony

Earlier this year, my good friend/benefactor/photographer comrade Edmond asked me to help him out with one of his gigs; I took his offer up in a heartbeat since I always learn so much from him every time we shoot together. We took pictures for a wedding, but I’ve never seen anything like this one–it took place in a side room of a modern, hip, SoHo restaurant in the form of Chinese tea ceremony. In fact, I didn’t even know for sure it WAS a wedding until I saw the rings exchanged! Woops. So it wasn’t an engagement announcement, so sue me. :-)

Here are some shots I captured that day:

Italian Eats!

I’m not a fan of over-hyping.  Its effects can spoil a good meal. Thus I was a bit tentative before going to Italy after hearing friends constantly rave about its cuisine. But as soon as I landed in Florence and took my first bite into a corner shop gelato cone, the world stopped as the dense, creamy, coffee gelato slid onto my lucky tastebuds.  It was just the coffee gelato and me with a silly grin on my face and my brain exploding with excitement thinking, WOW!  And barring a few missteps, encounter after encounter Italy’s incredibly fresh and luxurious foods kept impressing us: perfectly al dente, chewy pastas; luscious and “udderly” fresh cheeses; rich & flavor-packed salumis; fruity & aromatic wines; and gorgeously dark and delicious coffees…we were won over!

A visual taste of our good eats (click pictures for Slideshow View):

For those of you in the NYC area, the closest we’ve come to finding gelato of a similar quality as in Italy is L’Arte del Gelato.

Strolling in Italy

Sometimes you just need a break. Recently we found ourselves itching for one from our hustle ‘n bustle modern lifestyle and took a trip to Italy where we again were reminded of the necessary balance between work and rest (good related sermon here).   Whether we liked it at first or not, we were forced to cut ourselves off from the internet and work-related matters, and simply rest.  Italians surely do this well.  We encountered them in droves milling through grand, vast piazzas (squares) custom-made for just hanging out and that delicious habit of what Italians call “strolling” (a leisurely walk).  Gradually this attitude seeped in and we gratefully found ourselves enjoying these lolling strolls through Italy.

Glimpses of what we saw (click any picture to view in full screen gallery form):

Keenan’s Headshots

With our church being near Juilliard and Manhattan School of Music, Tim & I have the pleasure and privilege of hearing world class musicians play often.  Recently we had the honor of taking headshots for Keenan Boswell, our friend and extremely gifted organist from Juilliard.  We never thought we could rock out to organ music until we met him.  He  adds life to all that he plays.  Check out his music!  Rock on Keenan!
